For many of us, the start of a new year is a time of reflection. We’re likely to have had some space to have a good think about the state of our lives: family, relationships, physical and mental health, finances, career. Inevitably, this may lead to a renewed desire for a greater sense of purpose and value from the work you do and the workplace that you invest in (and that – hopefully – invests in you). It’s a personal journey that for some results in them seeking real-life change in the form of a fresh step in their career.
Before you leap into conversations and start trawling through Seek and LinkedIn searching for that needle-in-a-haystack ‘perfect’ new role, here are some steps that might help you to create a positive, long-term career path for yourself:
- Thoroughly review your CV. Consider a new format that clearly presents your experience. Focus on being succinct and highlighting your tangible career achievements, with emphasis on your most recent positions. Consider an employment summary on your first page – this is often a great way to introduce yourself.
- Speak to a Recruiter who truly understands your speciality. They can also share what they’re seeing in the market, provide insights and tangible opportunities wherever possible.
- Consider engaging with a Career/Leadership Coach, who can work with you to develop your CV, expand your technical and interpersonal skills, set goals and re-set your thinking as you take steps to evolve your career. A personal ‘Guide’ can be an invaluable resource, no matter what your career stage.
And for the longer term, we recommend attending events in person and/or online to engage with your professional community. Building a strong network is often key to a flourishing career. Reaching out to your contacts when you’ve started your search for a new role, plucking up the courage to ask for advice or an introduction and reciprocating whenever you can, are highly valuable assets.
