Aberdeen Group’s recent paper titled ‘Accelerating Leadership Development’ highlights critical insights drawn from their study this year, titled ‘Human Capital management Trends 2013’. Importantly it concluded that organisations are looking to speed up development of future leaders to close the forecasted demand gap in organisational readiness of new leaders in the next 3 to 5 years.
The paper identifies 3 key strategies that organisations, who enjoy above average leadership readiness, all implement.
These strategies are:
- Identify high potential talent and develop programs to develop it
- Make leadership development the business imperative
- Combine formal development programs and on-the-job stretch assignments to accelerate leadership development
The study found that ‘best in Class’ organisations are more likely to use formal tests and assessments to identify high potential. The study highlighted that cognitive based assessments, and in particular critical thinking assessments, were found to be valued by ‘Best in Class Organisations” as it was argued that these are indicative of an individuals’ ability to learn and grow as they develop through the leadership ranks. Moreover the study found that ‘top performing companies take a multi-faceted approach to identify high potential talent’.
