Aberdeen Group has released an interesting study that makes the case for maintaining a strong pipeline of leadership talent to sustain a competitive advantage. The study highlights the need for organisations to “rethink leadership development to keep pace” and moreover “rethink the processes and experiences that will deliver great leaders”.
The study points to 3 contributing pressures driving leadership development:
- Changing business landscape requiring new skills (54% of respondents)
- Need to find more creative, lower-cost means of developing leaders (35% of respondents)
- Shortage of available talent in the marketplace (33% of respondents)
Importantly, this research revealed that organisations with a process in place to identify high potential talent were twice as likely to have a “ready and willing” successor in place than organisations with no defined process in place.
When developing a sustainable leadership pipeline the Aberdeen Group research identified 3 priority areas:
- “Align the business and talent strategy”
- “Take a multifaceted approach to identifying and developing high potential talent”
- “Support development initiatives with an investment in technology that helps individuals and the broader organisation for career paths and ongoing succession”
