deliberatepractice was recently engaged to assist a client in the utility services industry, to strengthen their team effectiveness and cohesion. This included gaining a deeper understanding and commitment to the behaviours and culture that would support the team’s growth and performance. Our approach to this assignment involved enhancing individual self awareness within the team and to understand the impact that their behaviour has on others and the group’s outcomes in line with the overall business objectives.
To achieve our client’s objectives, the approach involved the following elements;
1. Individual Assessment
Each member of the team completed a personality assessment to raise their awareness of their personal style. Individual one-on-one debriefs were conducted to go through the results and identify potential individual development opportunities.
2. Facilitated Team Session
i) Firstly, deliberatepractice facilitated an interactive session to assist in identifying the desired culture of the team and the behaviours required from team members to support this culture
ii) The team then participated in a team building simulation that provided them the opportunity to display the agreed behaviours that supported the desired culture and maximise performance of their team. This simulation focused on helping the team to identify, explore, understand and practice the behaviours and skills that contribute to effective group problem solving and decision making.
iii) The final step involved assessing the group’s behavioural style (using the individual assessments) and identifying behaviours for the group to develop or build on in order to become more effective in the future.
All participants demonstrated heightened self-awareness and were able to identify the impact of their personality style on their stakeholder group and each other. The team gained a strong focus on the critical behaviours that will assist them to work more effectively as a group and with their clients. These outcomes have provided the essential building block on which our client can further develop and improve the effectiveness of the team’s capability as well as each member committing to an agreed desired culture and the behaviours required to support this.
